I’m wondering how you make initial conversations with strangers.
With internationals, I will ask “How long have you lived in this area?” If they have an accent I will ask them, “So where is home for you?” Depending on how they answer, I will ask them, “Where did you live before State College?” or “What country did you move from?” With this last question I need to be very confident that they are an immigrant or visiting scholar. Otherwise it can be embarrassing if they say, “I’m from California.”

Sometimes I will ask internationals if they have made any local friends since moving here.

With Americans, I ask about their job and whether they grew up in State College.

So how do you make conversation with strangers?
